HISTORY

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

Marriage Encounter finds its roots from Barcelona, Spain. Three years after having been ordained priest in May 31, 1959, Father Gabriel Calvo designed the “Encuentro Conjugal” in 1962 and had the first seminar for 28 couples from the workers of factories in Spain. In 1965, the “Encuentro Conjugal” weekend seminar was brought to Mexico. Crossing borders of land and language, “Encuentro Conjugal” became “Marriage Encounter” when it was brought to the United States in 1966. By the year 1967, Marriage Encounter was introduced at the Christian family Movement (CFM) convention held in the U.S.A.

convened at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana and couples were invited to participate at an ME Weekend. Among the couples were Luis and Asuncion Sison who attended an M. E. Weekend a week later. Meanwhile, Father Ruben Tanseco, S. J. an active CFM leader in Manila then taking his Master’s Degree in Pastoral Counseling at the University of Detroit, Michigan took his M.E. Weekend in Detroit. Together they formed the first M. E. Ecclesial Team, which administered the first M. E. Weekend in the Philippines, held in Angono, Rizal from October 3- 5, 1969. The seminar held under the aegis of the Christian Family Movement produced eleven (11) couples and four priests. Among the priests were Fr. Jess Fernandez, Fr. Pat Lim, and Fr. Aureo Nepomuceno.

On June 3, 1981, Father Jess Fernandez, who by this time had conducted a great number of successful M. E. Weekends, formed the Marriage and Family Encounter Association (MAFEA), a dynamic organization that conducted M. E. weekends almost every week. The formation of MAFEA faced some questions from other forerunners of the movement. Through the intercession of His Eminence, Jaime Cardinal Sin, a decision was made to move MEFP outside the CFM and to create four sectors under it. It was at this point that MAFEA changed its name to “Tuklasan” and became one of the four created sectors under the newly formed MEFP, among which are St. John, under Father Pat Lim, St. Andrew under Father Nepomuceno, and Alpha Omega-Magis Deo under Father Ruben Tanseco.

Tuklasan persevered in the training of its own local M. E. Teams. It has M. E. teams in Aparri, Tuguegarao, Isabela, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales, Legaspi, Calbayog, Davao and Cotabato. The provincial series of Tuklasan are already autonomous and have their own team couples and priests. Today, training of team couples for the regular M. E. Weekend and One Day Tuklasan and family teams for the Family Encounter Weekend is continuous. Tuklasan now has a pool of team couples and family teams ready to serve with full devotion to the apostolate.

Today, Tuklasan is the largest sector of the MEFP with as many as 25 series apart from the provincial outreach. It has the most number

TUKLASAN PLEDGE

By the grace of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of Our Heavenly Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, We pledge:

To dedicate ourselves, as a little Church, to the goals and objectives of the TUKLASAN Foundation;

To bear witness, in our couple and family life, to the enduring presence of God’s saving action in His Son, in and for the world;

To spread the Good News of Jesus Christ by living out the Paschal Mystery in our lives;

To strive for unity in our marriage relationship, as a living image of God, through our continuing dialogue, as against the world’s plan for our marriage;

To be open and apostolic, as a couple and as a family, in service for the world and in the world;

To help the TUKLASAN Foundation grow in the Philippines realizing that:

We are a Christian community called to witness to the LORD.

Our mission is to be a believing and evangelizing community, a community in dialogue with God, and a community at the service of man through the FAMILY LIFE APOSTOLATE, especially the Marriage Encounter.

May the Holy Family – Joseph, Mary and Jesus – bless us and keep us in their care. Amen.

JOHN 15: 16-17

"You did not choose me: I chose you & appointed you to go & bear much fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. And so the Father will give whatever you ask of Him in my Name. This is then, what I command you; LOVE ONE ANOTHER."

TUKLASAN THEME SONG

Gabing mapanglaw.

Refrain1       :
